When the follower sent it over, he made a connection for life.

AG emails: get to the bottom of Fast and Furious

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Emails by Attorney General Eric Holder from early 2011 express the need to get to the bottom of allegations that a risky law enforcement tactic had been used in Operation Fast and Furious.

In the early days of the controversy, two of Holder's e-mails and one by Deputy Attorney General James Cole expressed growing concern that something might have gone wrong in the flawed federal gun-smuggling probe.

In one e-mail, Holder tells aides, quote: "We need answers on this."

The full contents of the e-mails were described to The Associated Press by two people who have seen them.

Apple alters App Store algorithm yet again

Apple tinkered with its App Store algorithm last week and changed the search position of some apps by ordering results based on user ratings and an app's description. This morning a report from TechCrunch suggests the Cupertino company has tweaked the algorithm again to add some weight back to the app's name and keyword.

This change was detected by Tomasz Kolinko, developer and founder of App Store analyst company Appcod.es. Kolinko noticed the change when his own app, Love Letter Writing, appeared in searches for the terms "advice" and "writing advice."...

Philanthropic giving in the last few years has been under valued in Australia because of a disproportionate focus on tax structures and increased regulation on charitable vehicles such as private ancillary funds.

Andrew Thomas, general manager - philanthropy at Perpetual Private said he believes that while many philanthropists are reticent about publicity, some recognition would encourage even greater level of generosity.

Australia currently sits third in terms of giving as a proportion of GDP (0.69%), behind the US (1.67%) and the UK (0.73%).

The public treatment of private philanthropy is topical, with Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne using his budget speech in March to argue tax breaks to wealthy donors were overly generous and unfair.

Osborne's argument is the cost of the exemption is borne by the rest of the population in the form of higher taxes.

Britain is not alone in re-assessing incentives with the Obama administration also questioning revenue impact amid moves to limit the amount of giving that can be deducted from taxable income.

For Australia, currently in the throes of charitable sector reform, Thomas says additional red tape will be counterintuitive and that legislative changes miss the point of why people give - predominately for personal reasons.

Childhood obesity is a serious subject. So serious, Children?s Hospital Colorado and UnitedHealthcare have teamed up to start a research program studying the health benefits of cycling for youths including its impact on fighting childhood obesity.

The study is a part of ?Bikes For Life,? a youth program launched last fall to distribute 1,000 bicycles and helmets to kids statewide over the next three years. ?Bikes For Life? also receives in-kind support from USA Pro Cycling Challenge, one of the nation?s largest professional road races.

?Bikes For Life? encourages cycling as a healthy and safe activity for children and their families in Colorado. Along with providing bicycles and hosting ongoing community cycling safety events, the program features a research component that will be conducted by the Children?s Colorado Child Health Clinic and Weight Management Clinics.

Hugh Jackman to host free short film fest in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) ? Hugh Jackman wants anyone with a cell phone to get a chance to break in to show business.

The actor is hosting New York's first installment of Tropfest, billed as the world's largest short film festival. It's free and open to the public.

"Forget it, (if) you've got a mobile phone you can make a film, you can enter," Jackman said. "It's a great way for me to support the arts and anybody who wants to can get involved."

A panel of celebrity judges including Rose Byrne, Judah Friedlander and Jennifer Westfeldt will pick best film, actor and actress on Saturday in Bryant Park.

The films showcased at Tropfest may be short (they must all be under seven minutes) but they've led to some impressive success stories. The idea for the FX series "Wilfred" starring Elijah Wood came from Tropfest. Sam Worthington of "Avatar" won Best Actor in 2000.

Jackman recently received a special Tony for his "contributions to the Broadway community" and "personal generosity of spirit." With Tropfest, he's reaching out to filmmakers.

"The movies are not judged on technical merit because that's one way to make film very elitist. It's not so much about that or the quality of the lens but more the strength of the idea and the concept," he said. "Previously it's people who may have been excluded or may not have the money but they have the talent and here they can show it."

The entries have been narrowed down to eight finalists ? each required to have a Tropfest Signature Item. (The required item for New York's first Tropfest? A bagel.)

Tropfest, the brainchild of director John Polson, started 20 years ago in Australia and now draws more than 150,000 attendees each year. The winner for best film gets $20,000 from The Motion Picture Association and a week of meetings with studio execs, agents and managers.

Jackman says it's a no brainer for someone who wants to break into showbiz.

"When I first graduated from drama school I knew the statistics that 98 percent of actors were unemployed. I vowed to myself that every day I would do something for my career. I wasn't going to sit back. I was going to actively get out there and participate," he said. "Here is a way that anyone can contribute. There's no whining, 'But I'm a filmmaker it's so difficult, I can't get an agent.'"

Spotify receives mystery update, landscape view still not on the horizon

The newly revamped Spotify app got itself a mystery update today, but one thing that isn't included, is the missing landscape view. When changelogs don't get updated, we can usually take it as being a bug and or security fix update, both of which are welcomed.

One thing we know that a lot of you don't like about the vastly improved application though, is the strange lack of a landscape view. The old version had it, and while alarm bells rang when the preview version dropped, as that was only a preview we had to give Spotify the benefit of the doubt.

Knowing that it's a big deal for a lot of folks -- tablet users especially -- we approached Spotify to see if we could get anything from them on the matter. And, we did. It probably isn't going to please those of you who are already frustrated with it though;

"We have had a lot of interest in landscape mode for the new Android version however, I am not able to say if or when landscape mode might be available on Android again."

So, that doesn't absolutely rule it out, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be much of an issue to them. Why it is missing in the first place, remains a mystery.

GTC (Go to court) time for 'Jersey Shore' cast

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) ? There's a certain T-shirt hanging on the wall of The Shore Store, a boardwalk clothing shop where cast members of MTV's "Jersey Shore" punch the clock at their day jobs for the show. It reads, "I Love Seaside Heights, New Jersey this time of year!"

With the hit series filming its 6th season here, it's that time of year again in Seaside Heights. And as predictably as the waves crash on the shore, misbehaving cast members are rolling into municipal court with their lawyers and credit cards in tow.

So far this year, one cast member, Deena Cortese, was arrested for allegedly dancing in a roadway in Seaside Heights, slapping passing cars. And housemate Ronnie Ortiz-Magro is accused by a northern New Jersey man of assaulting him during a scuffle at the Bamboo Bar earlier this month.

Add to that a court hearing next week for a friend of Michael "The Situation" Sorrentino. John Manfre, known on the show as "The Unit," was charged with trying to bring drugs into the shore house, according to his lawyer, who is challenging the grounds for the arrest.

Raymond Raya, the attorney who represented Nicola "Snooki" Polizzi in her disorderly conduct arrest in 2010 for annoying beachgoers after having a few cocktails, said this kind of behavior is not exactly alien to Seaside Heights.

"I don't think there's anything happening at these clubs that's any different than what was going on 20 years ago," he said. "They're just filming it now. It's naturally unnatural."

Cortese was arrested June 10 after police said she appeared to be drunk and dancing in the street.

That was the same weekend that a scuffle broke out at Bamboo Bar, a popular nightspot, in which a northern New Jersey man, Justin Viterito, claimed he was assaulted by Ortiz-Magro. Viterito's lawyer, Matthew DiBrino, said his client was buying drinks for Ortiz-Magro and another man when a friend of his was pushed, prompting Viterito to defend his friend. The lawyer said a scuffle ensued during which Viterito was punched by Ortiz-Magro and another man.

MTV spokesman Michael Fabiani declined to comment on the cast members' legal woes, saying only, "MTV does not comment on series in production."

Fans, however, are eating it up. Many viewers of the show who lined up on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights last week, hoping to catch a glimpse of cast members as they worked in the T-shirt shop, said the worse the cast members behave, the more entertaining the show is.

"That's the main reason people watch it," said Marcus Snedeker, 31, of Jackson Township. "The episode where Ronnie knocked the dude out and he was lying in the street, that was one of the best episodes."

He was referring to an episode from the show's first season in which another man was shown taunting Ortiz and other cast members as they walked home, only to be laid out by a single punch from Ortiz-Magro, who boasted, "That's one shot! That's one shot, kid!"

Ortiz-Magro was originally charged with aggravated assault but entered a pre-trial intervention program that let him avoid criminal prosecution.

Kelly Kitchens, a 19-year-old from Roanoke, Va., drove seven hours last week to Seaside Heights to buy a hot-pink T-shirt from cast member Vinny Guadagnino. She is still disturbed by an episode in the show's first season in which a bar customer punched Polizzi during a dispute.

"That was so mean!" she said. "But I loved how everyone rallied around her."

The bar at which the incident occurred sells T-shirts commemorating it, with a crime-scene chalk outline of a woman's prone figure under the words "Snooki Was Here."

The most famous court appearance stemming from the show was Polizzi's in Sept. 2010, in which a municipal court judge sternly lectured her, borrowing from Dean Wormer's speech to Flounder in the movie "Animal House" in which the dean admonished the wayward student that "fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life."

"Rude, profane, obnoxious and self-indulgent is not the way to live your life," Judge Damian G. Murray told Polizzi. "If this was your idea of a good time, it appears your recent celebrity has affected your judgment."

After asking Polizzi whether she had staged the incident for the cameras (she said she had not,) the judge fined her $500 for one count of interfering with the quiet enjoyment of the beach. It was a plea deal negotiated down from a charge of "criminal annoyance of others," but not before a whole round of "Snooki is criminally annoying" jokes was launched.

In her haste to leave the building, Polizzi left the credit card she had used to pay her fine at the court clerk's window, prompting a court employee to chase after her with it before Polizzi sped away in a large SUV.

Raya, who represented Polizzi two years ago, said he doesn't think the production staff encourages cast members to break the law.

"You have these outside actors drawn to the show, girls coming down to Seaside Heights hoping to hook up with the guys on the show, guys coming to Seaside Heights hoping to hook up with the girls on the show," he said. "When you have a combination of large amounts of alcohol along with large amounts of hormones, this stuff is going to happen."

'Madagascar 3' stampedes, 'Rock,' Sandler flop

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Zoo animals remain hot at the box office. Singing stars and Adam Sandler are not.

Ben Stiller and his voice co-stars of "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" held on to the No. 1 spot again, with $35.5 million for the animated sequel's second weekend in domestic theaters.

Studio estimates Sunday put Ridley Scott's sci-fi adventure "Prometheus" at No. 2 again with $20.2 million.

"Madagascar 3" and "Prometheus" held off two under-achieving newcomers. The star-studded musical "Rock of Ages," whose cast includes Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin, flopped at No. 3 with $15.1 million.

Sandler's "That's My Boy" bombed with $13 million, the worst showing for one of his broad comedies since the mid-1990s. "That's My Boy" came in at No. 5, behind the $13.8 million for "Snow White & the Huntsman," a film that's been out for three weekends already.

"Sure, we would have liked to have done more," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution at Sony, which released "That's My Boy" and most of Sandler's past movies. "But you've got to give it to Adam. He mixes it up. This is a really off-the-wall comedy."

"That's My Boy" stars Sandler as a guy who became a fleeting teen celebrity after getting his seventh-grade teacher pregnant and now is a middle-aged loser trying to reconnect with his son (Andy Samberg).

As with most Sandler movies, the reviews were bad, but that usually does not stop his audience of young males from showing up.

The R rating for "That's My Boy" may have cut into the movie's business, prohibiting those under 17 from seeing it without an adult. Sandler's comedies usually are rated PG-13.

But Sandler has plenty of fans in their late teens and 20s, and that crowd had little interest in "That's My Boy."

Among Sandler's mainstream live-action comedies, it was the worst debut since 1996's "Happy Gilmore," which played in far fewer theaters than "That's My Boy" and came as Sandler was just climbing to stardom. And factoring in today's higher admission prices, "That's My Boy" sold fewer tickets than "Happy Gilmore."

Some of Sandler's handful of comic dramas and other more serious movies did less business than "That's My Boy." But even his 2000 bomb "Little Nicky" opened bigger, with $16.1 million in its first weekend.

Sandler has been one of Hollywood's steadiest earners since the late 1990s, with hits such as "The Longest Yard," ''Anger Management," ''Big Daddy" and "Grown-ups" opening with more than $40 million and becoming $100 million hits.

Sony remains high on Sandler, backing his upcoming animated comedy "Hotel Transylvania," along with "Grown-ups 2."

"It's a good business to be in, the Adam Sandler business," Bruer said.

Warner Bros. had its own dud with "Rock of Ages," adapted from the stage show built around 1980s rock hits and featuring an ensemble that includes Cruise, Zeta-Jones, Baldwin, Julianne Hough and Mary J. Blige.

Dan Fellman, the studio's head of distribution, was not ready to pull the plug on the movie, saying he hoped it might hang on in subsequent weekends. "Rock of Ages" drew mostly older, female crowds, an audience that does not necessarily rush out to a movie over opening weekend.

"Musicals, there have been a couple in the summer like "Hairspray" and "Mamma Mia!", that tend to have good holding power as counter-programming. We're hoping we can get back on track," Fellman said.

"Rock of Ages" added $4.1 million in a handful of overseas markets.

Between "Rock of Ages" and "That's My Boy," Hollywood fell back into a pattern that persisted at the start of summer season in May as new movies debuted weakly, unable to dislodge strong holdovers.

The superhero tale "The Avengers" has dominated so far, remaining in the top-10 after seven weekends, its $8.8 million take raising its domestic total to $586.7 million. The film has taken in $1.4 billion worldwide.

There have been only a few other hits, including "Men in Black 3," ''Madagascar 3" and "Snow White & the Huntsman."

"That's My Boy" and "Rock of Ages" have joined Johnny Depp's "Dark Shadows" among star-driven releases that fell flat.

"It doesn't always follow that big stars bring in the big bucks," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "'Madagascar' and 'Prometheus' tell you that it's about the concept more than the stars."

DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar 3" raised its domestic total to $120.5 million after two weekends. The movie added $53 million overseas, bringing its international receipts to $157 million and its worldwide haul to $278 million.

"Prometheus," released by 20th Century Fox, lifted its domestic total to $88.9 million after two weekends. With $25.5 million overseas, "Prometheus" pushed its international revenue to $128.9 million for a worldwide haul of $218 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
