DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) ? Democratic President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush are proving that it's a small world after all, with an extraordinary chance encounter a long way from home.

Obama and his Republican predecessor plan to appear together briefly Tuesday, when by coincidence both will be in the same city on Africa's east coast promoting development on the continent. Obama is on the final day of a weeklong tour of the continent, while the George W. Bush Institute is hosting a two-day summit on African women.

Initially the two men had no plans to meet, but the White House announced Monday that they would gather at a memorial for Americans killed in the U.S. Embassy bombing here nearly 15 years ago. They plan to lay a wreath in honor of the 11 Americans who died in the attack masterminded by Osama bin Laden, along with a near-simultaneous bombing at the U.S. Embassy in neighboring Kenya.

Meanwhile, first lady Michelle Obama and Laura Bush planned to appear together on a panel at the conference on empowering African women. President Bush plans to deliver his own speech there Wednesday, after the Obamas have returned to Washington.

Obama has credited Bush with helping save millions of lives by funding AIDS treatment. "I'm looking forward to being able, on African soil, to once again thank him on behalf of the American people for showing how American generosity and foresight could end up making a real difference in people's lives," Obama said Monday.

But Obama also said he wants to change the approach the U.S. takes with Africa. "We are looking at a new model that's based not just on aid and assistance, but on trade and partnership," he said.

"Ultimately, the goal here is for Africa to build Africa for Africans," Obama said. "And our job is to be a partner in that process."

In that spirit, Obama has announced a new trade agreement with eastern African nations and a program to bring more power to Africans who don't have access to electricity. His final event Tuesday is a speech at Tanzania's Ubungo Power Plant, which was funded by a U.S. grant and built by American corporations Symbion and General Electric.

"There's enormous potential here in Tanzania to start getting electricity out into villages in rural areas, more reliable service that can then power manufacturing, power new businesses which creates more jobs, creates more demand," Obama explained.

Protege of Iran's Ahmadinejad vows comeback

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? A protege of Iran's outgoing president said Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his allies will make a comeback as a future force in Iranian politics, newspapers reported on Tuesday.

The papers, including the pro-reform Shargh daily, quoted Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei as saying Ahmadinejad and his loyalists will "return" to power someday.

Ahmadinejad is to be replaced by president-elect Hasan Rouhani, who won nearly 51 percent of the votes in the June 15 balloting.

Under Iran's constitution, Ahmadinejad was banned from running for a third consecutive term but he could run in some future presidential election.

His protege, Mashaei, was disqualified from running by the country's election overseers, the clerics of the Guardian Council who vet both nominees and the election results.

Mashaei has been disliked by hard-liners because of his alleged role in a bitter feud between Ahmadinejad and the ruling clerics that preceded the election. The clerics denounced Mashaei as part of a "deviant current" that seeks to undermine the country's Islamic system.

Ahmadinejad appealed three times to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei but the efforts failed to restore Mashaei as a candidate, according to Abdollah Haji Sadeghi, a Khamenei representative in the powerful Revolutionary Guard.

In May, Ahmadinejad argued that the decision by the Guardian Council to disqualify Mashaei from the presidential race was an act of "oppression."

Since his landslide win, Rouhani has vowed to follow a "path of moderation" and pursue greater openness over Iran's nuclear program.

He is set to take office in August and although Iran's president cannot set policy on major decisions such as the nuclear program, he can influence views by the ruling clerics.

Though sidelined since Rouhani's election, Ahmadinejad still enjoys a significant political base, with grateful and loyal supporters, especially in hardscrabble and poorer places across Iran.

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) ? Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican predecessor President George W. Bush found common ground in Africa on Tuesday, honoring the victims of a terrorist attack in an unprecedented chance encounter a world away from home.

The U.S. presidents had a brief, silent appearance together at a monument to victims of the 1998 embassy bombing here in the east African city where Bush coincidentally happened to be as Obama wrapped up a weeklong tour of the continent. While the two U.S. leaders didn't say anything publicly, their wives engaged in a warm and chatty joint appearance at a summit on African women.

Initially the two presidents weren't even planning to meet while in town, but first lady Michelle Obama joked as she sat next to her predecessor: "They're learning from us."

The Obamas departed Africa for home shortly after crossing paths with the Bushes, who were hosting the summit promoting the role of African first ladies in bringing change to their countries. Bush ended up joining the current president for the wreath-laying ceremony honoring the Tanzanian victims of the simultaneous attacks at the U.S. embassies here and in Kenya masterminded by Osama bin Laden.

The two presidents bowed their heads as a Marine placed the wreath of red, white and blue flowers in front of the large stone memorial on the grounds of the new U.S. Embassy. After a few moments, they shook hands with survivors of the attack and relatives of those killed before walking back into the embassy together in private discussion.

At that very moment, their wives were putting on a public display of mutual affection in a discussion moderated by American journalist Cokie Roberts. Mrs. Obama said she wanted to appear with Laura Bush because "I like this woman" and it's therapeutic to share the challenges of their roles.

"It's sort of a club, a sorority, I guess," Mrs. Bush responded.

Their goal was to encourage African first ladies to raise their voices for causes they are passionate about, even if the public is sometimes focused on more trivial matters, the said.

"While people are sort of sorting through our shoes and our hair, whether we cut it or not ..." Mrs. Obama started.

"Whether we have bangs," Mrs. Bush interjected to laughter. Mrs. Obama expressed surprise that her change in hair style this year would prompt so much media coverage. "Who would have thought? I didn't call that."

"But," Mrs. Obama said, "we take our bangs and we stand in front of important things that the world needs to see. And eventually people stop looking at the bangs and they start looking at what we're standing in front of."

"We hope," Mrs. Bush joked. Mrs. Obama replied, "They do, and that's the power of our roles."

When it comes to the power of their husbands' roles, Obama has said he wants to usher in a new era of U.S.-Africa relations. Obama has praised Bush for helping save millions of lives by funding AIDS treatment. But, he said Monday, "We are looking at a new model that's based not just on aid and assistance, but on trade and partnership."

In that spirit, Obama announced a program to bring more power to Africans without access to electricity. During a visit to a local power plant built with a U.S. grant, Obama demonstrated a soccer ball designed to bring power to communities off the power grid.

One invention that could help on the electricity front is the SOCCKET ball, developed by two Harvard graduates. The ball has a pendulum-like mechanism inside that creates kinetic energy during play and stores it. Its maker says 30 minutes of play can power a simple LED lamp for three hours.

Obama kicked the ball off his foot and did a low header. "We're going to start getting these all around Africa," Obama said. "Pretty impressive stuff."

In remarks afterward, he touted the "Power Africa" electricity program as a win-win for Africans and U.S. companies. He also reflected on the weeklong trip, recalling some of the folks he met along the way, including a female farmer in Senegal and young people in the Soweto area of South Africa's capital city, Johannesburg.

"I'm inspired because I'm absolutely convinced that with the right approach, Africa and its people can unleash a new era of prosperity," Obama said.

Canon EOS 70D: Yet Another Incredible Video DSLR From Canon

Canon has always been one step ahead of the pack when it comes to putting video in DSLRs. From the pro 5D to the beginner Rebel T's, it's been a leader. But the new tech in the Canon EOS 70D could change things forever once again.

The Canon EOS 70D uses a new 20.2-megapixel APS-C sensor. That spec might not sound all the remarkable from the outset, but the sensor's architecture is completely new, which allows the camera to achieve the fastest and most precise continuous autofocus while recording video. For many shooters, this is the holy grail. The killer feature they've been waiting for.

Let's back up. On the entry-level T4i last year, Canon started using a hybrid autofocus system that used a combination contrast and phase detection autofocus system so that the camera could focus continuously while recording video.

When recording video, DSLRs use sensor-based autofocus, rather than the optical autofocus sensors that you use when you're simply shooting photos using through viewfinder. Initially, sensor-based systems were just too slow to work continuously because they only used contrast ratios to find focus. By sacrificing a couple of photodiodes on the sensor to phase detection, the new hybrid system was able to do the work of finding focus fast enough that it was reasonable to call it effective.

Or that was the theory anyway. We tested the system a couple fo different times on both the T4i and the mirrorless Canon EOS M, and we weren't blown away. It worked?yes?but it was still too slow to be reliable.

Now this year, the 70D introduces a new phase-detection only system Canon calls Dual Pixel CMOS AF. That sounds fancy, and actually, the tech behind it reflects a genuine advancement in technology rather than just a marketing gimmick. The new CMOS sensor's 20.2-megapixel resolution has been divided into 40.1 million-photodiode architecture so that you've basically got two diodes capturing light for each pixel.

Why? Because now there is a phase detection diode at every point on the sensor. Instead of just a few scattered about, you've got a sensor evenly peppered with phase detection points. (The two diodes at each pixel point synthesize, so you're not losing light sensitivity?at least, that's what Canon tells us.)

In practice, this new AF system is pretty remarkable?at least as far as we can tell. We tried out a near-production version of the 70D at a briefing in New York, and the speed and precision of the autofocus during video was hard to believe. This video was made by Canon so it should be taken with a little bit of skepticism, but our brief experience with the 70D would seem to verify that some of this awesome is actually possible.

One of the nice things about the tech is that it gets rid of the old "focus hunt" that inches closer and closer to focus. Instead, the 70D's focus algorithms smoothly slide into place so you lose the jarring back-and-forth jumps you've noticed before.

The Canon EOS 70D swoops in above the Canon 60D in the line, although the 60D isn't going anywhere just yet. Similarly, Canon wanted us to be clear that it's not exactly a replacement for the 7D either.

The 70D offers a few improvements over its predecessors, including new articulating, three-inch capacitive touchscreen, and faster seven frame-per-second continuous shooting.

Amongst the drawbacks of the camera are that it doesn't have a headphone jack for monitoring the audio that you're recording through the mic jack or built-in microphone, which is sad, considering the strength of the camera's video features.

The camera will be available in September for $1200 (body alone), $1349 (w/18-55mm kit lens), and $1549 (w/18-135mm kit lens).
