Surprising records after three games of NFL season

WHAT'S TRENDING

After three weeks of play, New England, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Denver, Detroit and New Orleans have one or zero victories. Houston, Atlanta and Arizona are the only 3-0 teams. It's a year in which the field is so bunched up, it's hard to say how the thing will shake out. In previous years, the Patriots or Steelers or Packers may have lost a game they should have won at this point, but losing two of their first three is pretty surprising. According to the NFL, the 27 teams that are either 2-1 or 1-2 are the most through three weeks since realignment in 2002. If you're going to start out slowly, this is probably the best year in a while to do it.

ON DECK

This will be the first full slate of games since the first week of January that the league's unionized officials will be on the job. One thing to look for - and it was pretty evident in the Cleveland-Baltimore game Thursday night - is that the pace should be far more even than it was with the replacement officials. For teams who run the no-huddle offense, the return of the pros should be beneficial since they rely on calls being made decisively and the ball being placed quickly. Baltimore ran some no-huddle Thursday night and Denver, Atlanta, New England and Green Bay, among others, will be running it this weekend. It might be worth keeping an eye on those teams to see if their offenses play any better with officials who aren't constantly discussing every play with an on-field league representative.

NORTHERN EXPOSURE

The Minnesota Vikings are flying high after knocking off San Francisco last week and head into Detroit having lost 11 straight NFC North games. They're catching the Lions at a good time. Detroit suffered a demoralizing loss at Tennessee and quarterback Matthew Stafford has a leg injury, the seriousness of which has been hidden all week by coach Jim Schwartz. Opponents are doing a decent job keeping Calvin Johnson (24 catches for 369 yards and one touchdown) from dominating games, but he's always a threat. Chicago is heading down to Dallas, where it's going to have to focus on protecting quarterback Jay Cutler, whose 58.6 passer rating ranks 31st. The Cowboys rank second in pass defense and 19th against the run.

STAT OF THE WEEK

Of the 32 teams, 17 have had an individual rush for 100 or more yards during the first three weeks.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Teams: New York Giants (2-1) at Philadelphia Eagles (2-1)

When: 7:20 p.m. Sunday (NBC).

Point spread: Eagles by 2 .

Key injuries: Giants - T David Diehl (knee), CB Jayron Hosley (hamstring), WR Hakeem Nicks (foot, knee) and LB Keith Rivers (hamstring) are out; CB Michael Coe (hamstring) and S Antrel Rolle (knee) are questionable. Eagles - T King Dunlap (hamstring) and LB Akeem Jordan (hamstring) are out; S Colt Anderson (knee), WR Riley Cooper (collarbone) and C Jon Dorenbos (ankle) are questionable.

Player to watch: All eyes will be on Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, whose position as leader of the team is being undermined by his poor play. Vick ranks 29th in passer rating with a 66.2 mark.

Recent history: The Eagles have won six of the past seven, but they got beat badly at home last year, 29-16.

Key statistic: The Eagles' LeSean McCoy has averaged 107 yards rushing per game in his last three home games against the Giants.

Bottom line: The Giants love it when everyone has counted them out. They were without RB Ahmad Bradshaw and Nicks last week and still clobbered Carolina. The injury situation is getting worse though, with the Giants saying Saturday that Nicks would miss this game, and Diehl, Rivers and Hosley also ruled out. In addition, Rolle (knee) and Corey Webster (hand) are hurting. The offense played well behind backup running back Andre Brown and quarterback Eli Manning. The Eagles are lucky to be where they are and looked terrible against Arizona. They're healthy and their defense has been outstanding. They just need Vick to start playing like a starting quarterback.

GREEN BAY

59.04 Percent the Packers pass the ball on first and 10.

7.33 Percent above the league average the Packers rank in frequency they give up a sack.

9.77 Yards per catch wide receiver Greg Jennings (right) has averaged over his last seven games.

86.7 Percent kicker Mason Crosby has converted field goal attempts in his past 16 games (26 for 30).

6-9 Combined record of the team's next five opponents.

NFC NORTH

70.1 Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder's completion percentage, second-highest in the NFL.

0 Runs of 20 or more yards the Vikings defense has allowed this season, making them one of five teams not to have allowed one.

4 Consecutive games in which Bears cornerback Tim Jennings has had an interception.

179 Consecutive regular-season games Detroit's Jeff Backus has played in, the most of any current tackle in the NFL.

42 Combined quarterback hits the Packers (22) and Bears (20) have allowed this season.

NFL

75.7 Percent of teams who won their first three games who have made the playoffs since 1990.

7 Games that were decided in the final minute of regulation or in overtime in Week 3, matching the high in Week 6 of 1995.

17 Teams that already have suffered a home defeat, including all four teams in the AFC West.

13 Consecutive games the Baltimore Ravens have won at home, the longest current streak in the NFL.

248 Touchdowns scored in the first three weeks of the season, the most to open the season in league history.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? E-Mini ...

When you're in some place where you wish to earn more money, and you are prepared for a real challenge, you might find that taking a brief look at daytrading will be ideal for you. There are numerous folk out there who've revealed that day-trading is the career that is correct for them and one of the really important things that you will need to realise is you can do it right from your home! Take a second to think about what's needed to be a nice day trader . The very first thing you will need for a job in daytrading is the time for it. Do keep under consideration, though , the proven fact that when referring to becoming successful in anything, day-trading very definitely included, you must be able to think up a schedule and to stay with it for an extended period. We're not saying you need to be well placed to commit 40 hours per week to it, or maybe 20. The idea of Wealthy Trading is founded on the ?crazy? concept that a Trader can enjoy trading success, but also be freed from their stock charts. Otherwise, a Wealthy Trader spends only one or two minutes a day in front of his / her PC making trades. They do not need hours a day chained like slaves to their charts, making trade after trade after trade, as they execute an ultra-complex trading technique. They spend 1 or 2 minutes a day-trading and they make 1 or 2 trades a WEEK?and yet they're very successful at the exact same time.

And it increased by 0.9% from December 2009! That is miles away from the 9.7% released by the govt. So what does the ?true? rate of unemployment look like, when you dump the seasonal changes, and you consider ALL classes of jobless and underemployed employees? How does 18.0% sound to you? That is correct, the non-seasonally changed, ?true? rate of unemployment, including ALL classes of the un- or under-employed, is a gigantic 18.0%. The information released earlier in the month would prefer you to believe the economy must be improving. Hopefully it isn't something that menacing. But if you glance at the real info, how could you potentially realize that? How could you actually believe, after critically considering this information, the Economy is headed in the correct direction? So that the question then becomes, WHY does the govt figure out and release the information in this format? Are they intentionally deceiving the U.S.

Perhaps you're wondering those day traders are just too fortunate to make some random profit in market. It's a wrong idea as day traders shouldn't only completely understand the logic trading but they also must have a clear and calm attitude to make imperative call. These days trading systems are available to average public users. Some of the systems can overlook and monitor the stockmarket, or select the best pick of stock for trader . You may either select the systems to constantly update the new stock statistical data, or use the ones that can research and prompt you the bullish stock pick or which is going to plunge. ) Getting plenty of trades in every month so that ( as long as we maintain an edge ) we've got a high chance of profits.

) Maintaining a solid margin on our trades such that commission and other costs amounts to only a tiny p.c of trading money. ( This is a very important metric to trace ) four. ) Exploiting our place in the markets : Our niche is between the huge players who take long-term positions and create waves, and the ?fastest guns? who run their automated methods on dynamic PCs that reside close to the exchanges own PCs. We are able to succeed by carving out our own unique niche.

Scientists find missing link between players in the epigenetic code

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? Over the last two decades, scientists have come to understand that the genetic code held within DNA represents only part of the blueprint of life. The rest comes from specific patterns of chemical tags that overlay the DNA structure, determining how tightly the DNA is packaged and how accessible certain genes are to be switched on or off.

As researchers have uncovered more and more of these "epigenetic" tags, they have begun to wonder how they are all connected. Now, research from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine has established the first link between the two most fundamental epigenetic tags -- histone modification and DNA methylation -- in humans.

The study, which was published Sept. 30, 2012 by the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, implicates a protein called UHRF1 in the maintenance of these epigenetic tags. Because the protein has been found to be defective in cancer, the finding could help scientists understand not only how microscopic chemical changes can ultimately affect the epigenetic landscape but also give clues to the underlying causes of disease and cancer.

"There's always been the suspicion that regions marked by DNA methylation might be connected to other epigenetic tags like histone modifications, and that has even been shown to be true in model organisms like fungus and plants," said senior study author Brian Strahl, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry and biophysics in the UNC School of Medicine and a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. "But no one has been able to make that leap in human cells. It's been controversial in terms of whether or not there's really a connection. We have shown there is."

Strahl, along with his postdoctoral fellow Scott Rothbart, honed in on this discovery by using a highly sophisticated technique developed in his lab known as next generation peptide arrays. First the Strahl lab generated specific types of histone modifications and dotted them on tiny glass slides called "arrays." They then used these "arrays" to see how histone modifications affected the docking of different proteins. One protein -- UHRF1 -- stood out because it bound a specific histone modification (lysine 9 methylation on histone H3) in cases where others could not.

Strahl and his colleagues focused the rest of their experiments on understanding the role of UHRF1 binding to this histone modification. They found that while other proteins that dock on this epigenetic tag are ejected during a specific phase of the cell cycle, mitosis, UHRF1 sticks around. Importantly, the protein's association with histones throughout the cell cycle appears to be critical to maintaining another epigenetic tag called DNA methylation. The result was surprising because researchers had previously believed that the maintenance of DNA methylation occurred exclusively during a single step of the cell cycle called DNA replication.

"This role of UHRF1 outside of DNA replication is certainly unexpected, but I think it is just another way of making sure we don't lose information about our epigenetic landscape," said Strahl.

Our opinion: A costly piece of art leaves us asking, what is NYRA thinking? Horse racing should be an asset in New York, not one bumble and scandal after another.

When you embark on a project, it?s useful to ask: What would success look like? We can?t think of a more appropriate question when it comes to the future of thoroughbred racing in New York.

We sure know what success wouldn?t look like. It wouldn?t look like the 2011 annual report of the state?s Franchise Oversight Board, which detailed how the New York Racing Association lost even more money than 2010, despite taking in millions of dollars more in bets and getting help from new video slots.

Nor would it look like a $250,000 piece of vanity art commissioned by an association that is forever crying poverty while managing the kind of business that any mob boss would give his right arm to run.

What was NYRA thinking when it hired an artist to paint a mural that featured some of NYRA?s own leaders? If NYRA had a quarter of a million dollars burning a hole in its pocket, it should have sent it to the state treasury to start making up for all those years that the association stiffed taxpayers on their fair share of proceeds from their own racetracks.

It?s bad enough that as the Times Union?s James M. Odato reported Thursday, NYRA commissioned this art in a year when it lost $24 million. It?s all the more insulting that it was ordered by Charles Hayward, NYRA?s now-ousted CEO, at a time when NYRA was secretly overcharging certain bettors to the tune of $8.5 million. And for Mr. Hayward to give this commission to a friend smacks of crass cronyism.

When it comes to what not to do, a new NYRA Reorganization Board has plenty to work with as it embarks on a three-year project to reform the association and the management of horse racing in New York. The list of ?don?ts? stretches back through years of mismanagement and corruption.

As for how racing in New York should look, three words come to mind: professional, transparent and invisible.

A professional racing operation would operate like a public benefit corporation, not like a private club whose members seem to think they?re living off a taxpayer-supported trust fund. It used to be called the sport of kings, but horse racing has long been subsidized by the ordinary citizens of New York, and they deserve a return on their investment.

A transparent racing operation would open its records and operations to taxpayer scrutiny, just as a public agency is required to do, and its salaries would be more in line with the public sector than a Vegas casino. That would be the case even if the state decides, as some have suggested, to hand the management of the state?s tracks over to a for-profit company. Before that happens, though, New York should explain why this can?t be done by a public or nonprofit entity.

As for invisible, NYRA, or whoever is running the show, wouldn?t overshadow the excitement of great horse racing. Its blunders wouldn?t interfere with the economic benefits that race tracks would be spinning off to their surrounding communities, nor would its scandals limit the millions of dollars that are supposed to be earmarked for ? remember this? ? education.

In short, racing, and all its promised benefits, would be the headlines. NYRA? We?d hardly know it was there.

(AP) ? Hawaii coach Norm Chow joked a few days ago that Provo would bring back some fond memories.

Friday night instead was a nightmare, one the former BYU assistant couldn't wait to escape as evidenced by a noticeably brief postgame handshake with Cougars coach Bronco Mendenhall after being shut out 47-0.

"We've got to grow up," said the 66-year-old Chow, who watched as two defensive linemen were carted off early and also lost two offensive linemen to injury. "This is a big-boy business; nobody is feeling sorry for us. We can't feel sorry for ourselves."

It didn't help that a couple of freshmen backups ? quarterback Taysom Hill and 17-year-old running back Jamaal Williams ? did most of the damage as BYU (3-2) racked up 396 yards rushing.

"We came out and started fast," said Hill, making his first college start in place of injured senior Riley Nelson. "It was the first time we scored on the first drive, which was phenomenal. And to come out and win the way we did was great."

Hill ran for 143 yards, including a 68-yard TD scamper out of the no-huddle offense.

"On the sideline I've been asking for that play," said Hill, who also passed for 112 yards and two TDs. "They were gassed and when we could go no-huddle and run something like that, it works pretty well. My line got to their backers and their safeties split. It became a foot race, and luckily I outran them."

The Cougars led 20-0 at halftime and 40-0 through three quarters.

The shutout was BYU's first since Nov. 7, 2009, when it beat Wyoming 52-0.

Hawaii (1-3) had not been shut out since Oct. 3, 1998, a span of 182 straight game. The 47-point margin of defeat was the largest since a 70-14 loss at Fresno State in 2004 ? another reason social media sites lit into first-year head coach Chow afterward.

In three losses, Hawaii has been outscored 165-34. Its only win this year came against unheralded Lamar.

Against Nevada last week, running back Stefphon Jefferson scored seven TDs.

Friday, BYU split up the wealth, with rugby player Paul Lasike adding a pair of late TDs in mop-up duty.

Williams was the one who stepped up early when starter Michael Alisa broke his right forearm.

"It felt pretty good, to be 17 and to have them trust me like that," said Williams, who gained 155 yards on 15 carries, with two TDs.

"I'm learning to mature faster."

So is Hill, who is a returned missionary and not the average freshman.

Hill finished 12 of 21 for 112 yards, with TD passes of 22 and 12 yards. His rushing totals were the most by a BYU quarterback since Brandon Doman ? the Cougars' offensive coordinator ? gained 164 yards on 18 carries in 2001.

Despite Hill's solid showing, Mendenhall insisted Nelson would remain his starter when healthy and capable.

For now, Mendenhall said Nelson's injured back needs rest to heal and couldn't say how long that would take.

"I am a Riley Nelson fan and believe in his leadership ability when he is healthy," Mendenhall said.

Hill, meanwhile, wasn't about to get caught up in any quarterback controversy but was preparing as if he'd start next week against Utah State.

Chow, who was back in Provo for the first time as a head coach, was simply trying to regroup ? especially after seeing defensive tackles Geardon Hanohano and starter Siasau Matagiese carted off the field following apparent helmet-to-helmet collisions on back-to-back series during the first quarter.

Team officials said initial X rays to the neck area were negative and both had movement in their limbs.

Both players flashed the "shaka" ? the Hawaiian sign for hang loose ? as they were being carted off the field.

That was about the only good sign for Hawaii fans, who watched on national television as BYU outgained the Warriors 540-149, and held a 30-9 advantage in first downs and a 396-41 edge in rushing.

Still, BYU defensive back Preston Hadley was not about to get overconfident.

"I do not think we should walk off just patting ourselves on the back," he said. "That is not the best team we played. But it is a confidence booster to hopefully get us in the right direction."

Chow has a ways to go for that to happen.

Chow spent 27 years at BYU (1973-1999), from graduate assistant to offensive coordinator and assistant head coach, and helped the team win a national championship in 1984. But the first-year Hawaii coach stirred things up in July when he reiterated the university's position that a returning missionary, defensive back/return specialist Michael Wadsworth, could transfer to any school except BYU and intimated the Cougars engaged in unfair recruiting.

Mendenhall denied the charges, and let his team handle things on the field.

"Our team took some steps forward today, certainly with an emphasis on running the football," he said.

(AP) ? As consumers we want our electronic gadgets to be durable. But as patients, we might want them to dissolve ? inside our bodies.

Scientists reported Thursday that they succeeded in creating tiny medical devices sealed in silk cocoons that did the work they were designed for, then dissolved in the bodies of lab mice. It's an early step in a technology that may hold promise, not only for medicine, but also for disposal of electronic waste.

The new work is "a remarkable achievement" in combining materials to produce a working device, said Christopher Bettinger of Carnegie Mellon University. He works on biodegradable electronics but was not involved in the study.

Doctors already use implants that dispense drugs or provide electrical stimulation, but they don't dissolve. The new work is aimed at making devices that do their jobs as long as needed and then just dissolved, without need for surgical removal or risk of long-term side effects.

In the experiment, the devices ? which look like tiny computer chips ? were designed to generate heat, a potential strategy for fighting infection after surgery by killing germs, said John Rogers of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne, an author of the study.

The devices worked in the mice for more than a week, until their silk coatings dissolved enough for bodily fluids to erode key parts of the devices, he said. After three weeks, the tiny gadgets had basically disappeared.

Someday for people, similar devices might be programmed to monitor the body and release drugs accordingly, or produce electric current to accelerate bone healing, Rogers said.

The researchers used the protective cocoon envelope because silk can be processed to stay intact for varying periods of time ? from seconds to weeks and potentially for years, he said. The device's circuitry itself was built from other materials that degrade in the body, such as magnesium and silicon.

The federally funded research was reported online in the journal Science.

Apart from medicine, the technology offers a way to cut down on electronic waste, or E-waste, if portable consumer devices could be made with decomposing components, the researchers wrote.

And there are other potential uses, too Rogers suggested. For example, such devices could be scattered near a chemical spill to monitor things like chemical concentrations without any need to retrieve them later.

Five Creative and Quirky Costume Ideas You Can Make at Home

Homemade costumes can be outstandingly creative, using simple supplies that are found in the average home.

Halloween is around the corner, and it?s time to start thinking about costumes! ?Most people head to the local costume shop or buy a?costume online at places like CostumeExpress, Amazon, or even Etsy. But sometimes it?s fun to be original and make your own costume at home. Homemade costumes can be outstandingly creative, using simple supplies that are found in the average home.

With most of these costumes a generic base layer of clothing is necessary. If possible, start with a solid color top and bottom. Any neutral color, such as black, white, or grey, is best, but other shades are fine if there are no last minute choices.

A Leaf Pile

A Halloween costume can easily made out of fallen leaves. Most yards are filled with them in October, and they can be attached to clothing with stick glue. Other times of the year, look for downed tree limbs or shrubbery clippings to find a costume that takes you back to nature. If you have the time to do a little shopping, you can also buy colorful fake leaves at most craft stores. These won?t crumble as easily, so your costume will last longer.

Conjoined Twins

If you need a pair costumes, you can easily kill two birds with one stone. Place both people in an over-sized shirt, each with an arm wrapped around the other?s back. The evening may end up being a bit close for comfort, so make sure both individuals are willing to work together!

Something Sweet

Affix as many different types of candy as possible to a white t-shirt. You could call your costume a Candy Dish, a Sweet Tooth, or, if you are willing to give away pieces of candy, a Trick-or-Treater in Reverse.

The Grandfather Clock

A brown sheet or piece of cloth can be easily turned into a cloak for an evening. To do this, fold one edge of the sheet into an eight-inch section. Place the cloth around your shoulders, lifting the folded section above your head. Then tie the cloak around your neck with a piece of string or fabric. Using makeup or washable markers, draw a clock face on your own. Affix clock hands made from construction paper or felt to your nose. You can also take this in a conceptual direction if the supplies are more readily available.

The Cleaning Supply Closet

With a roll of duct tape and a closet full of cleaning supplies, a costume is born. Small cleaning supplies, like sponges and brushes, can be adhered to clothing with tape folded over on itself. Find bottles that are mostly empty, clean them out well, and attach them to clothing in the same manner. With any open spaces, safety pin rags or paper towels to clothing. For added effect, carry a broom and dust pan. The costume will be an original and, as an added bonus, you are ready to help with cleanup after the party.

What creative costumes have you come up with?

NLRP3 promotes inflammation-induced skin cancer but is dispensable for asbestos-induced mesothelioma.

Immunol Cell Biol. 2012 Sep 25;

Authors: Chow MT, Tschopp J, M?ller A, Smyth MJ

Abstract
Asbestos exposure can result in serious and frequently lethal diseases, including malignant mesothelioma. The host sensor for asbestos-induced inflammation is the NLRP3 inflammasome and it is widely assumed that this complex is essential for asbestos-induced cancers. Here, we report that acute interleukin-1? production and recruitment of immune cells into peritoneal cavity were significantly decreased in the NLRP3-deficient mice after the administration of asbestos. However, NLRP3-deficient mice displayed a similar incidence of malignant mesothelioma and survival times as wild-type mice. Thus, early inflammatory reactions triggered by asbestos are NLRP3-dependent, but NLRP3 is not critical in the chronic development of asbestos-induced mesothelioma. Notably, in a two-stage carcinogenesis-induced papilloma model, NLRP3-deficient mice showed a resistance phenotype in two different strain backgrounds, suggesting a tumour-promoting role of NLRP3 in certain chemically-induced cancer types.Immunology and Cell Biology advance online publication, 25 September 2012; doi:10.1038/icb.2012.46.

Mitt Romney: Yeah, about those tax cuts? | Knowledge Hub Networks

Everyone needs to adjust their expectations:

?By the way, don?t be expecting a huge cut in taxes, because I?m also going to lower deductions and exemptions,? Romney said, according to various news media reports.?

Um, yay?

?All the rates come down,? Romney said. ?But unless people think there's going to be a huge reduction in the taxes they owe, that's really not the case, because we're also going to limit deductions and exemptions, particularly for people at the high end.

Details to come, obviously.

Green ideas for green manufacturing | Eco-Business.com

The Fujisawa City project in the Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo brought together nine companies and the government to develop an energy-smart community. Image: Panasonic

In this interview by Singapore?s Energy Market Authority, Panasonic Asia Pacific managing director Yorihisa Shiokawa reveals how manufacturers can contribute to an energy efficient society through innovation, collaboration and careful management.

Energy Market Authority: Panasonic?s ambition is to be the leading ?Green Innovation Company? in the electronics sector. What steps is Panasonic undertaking to achieve this target? What impact will this have on consumers and the environment?

Yorihisa Shiokawa: We want to become the number one Green Innovation Company in the electronics sector by 2018. Through our ?eco ideas? strategy, we create innovative businesses, products and services that are energy-efficient or have smart energy features, and therefore are more environmentally-friendly. But they also help consumers save money. We are on track to achieving 80 per cent of our total sales in Asia Pacific from these eco products.

Panasonic Group is also focused on developing Total Energy Solutions that involve energy creation, storage, savings and management. We set up the Panasonic Energy Solutions Development Centre Singapore in July this year to develop total energy solutions not only for the region, but also to commercialise them globally. Panasonic is working closely with the local authorities in Singapore to test-bed some of our urban solutions at the?Punggol Eco-Town project.

We have a Panasonic Eco Learning Programme, which will help 200,000 students across Asia Pacific to develop environmental awareness and an understanding of how virtually zero CO2 emissions can be achieved through technology. We will continue to spread the word so that more will come together to create a positive impact on the environment.

Panasonic applies the ?eco ideas? strategy to our own business. We aim to reduce the environmental impact of our business operations by making the best use of resources and energy through green innovation. We have set a goal of a 600,000-tonne CO2 reduction in our operations versus a ?business-as-usual? level (based on our fiscal year ending March 2005).

We are also developing three more ?eco ideas? factories by March 2013, which will demonstrate our sustainability solutions and capabilities. These factories adopt green solutions and exemplify how reductions in CO2 emissions, managing waste generation and chemical substance releases and maintaining energy efficiency can be achieved in manufacturing facilities.

EMA: In difficult economic times, some consumers may not be inclined to pay for green-certified appliances. What role can global manufacturers play in raising the awareness of the importance of such appliances?

YS: Global manufacturers can take the lead to help imbue eco-consciousness among consumers though championing environmental awareness programmes and education initiatives. Industry players must work with governments worldwide to ensure their products are compliant with the energy regulations of each country. In Singapore, Panasonic?s air conditioners and refrigerators meet the standards which are required for The Energy Label, mandated by the National Environment Agency (NEA).

Asia Pacific also has many environmental challenges in emerging and rapidly growing markets. Economic growth can create environmental pressures ? especially in creating and providing a stable supply of energy and meeting the demand for improved living standards. Product customisation for particular markets is important. In India, for example, the CUBE air-conditioner takes into account specific Indian climatic conditions and space limitations. This kind of product customisation will encourage customers to purchase green-certified appliances.

EMA: Businesses, especially manufacturing companies, are some of the biggest consumers of energy. How do you think businesses can and should conserve energy through their own business practices?

YS: Business growth must be achieved with an eye on conserving the planet for future generations. We are committed to promoting environmental sustainability and reducing the impact of our business operations. There are two ways to achieve this:

First, look at reducing CO2 emission. Panasonic has been using meters and gauges to manage energy consumption during production, as well as replacing fluorescent lights with energy-efficient Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lights in our factories. By doing so, we have been able to reduce CO2 emissions by 560,000 tonnes in our Asia-Pacific operations as of the end March this year.

Second, companies should set assessment criteria on the environmental impact of their products. This needs to be done right from the planning and design stage. Improved environmental performance can be based on criteria such as energy savings, resource savings and chemicals management.

EMA: There is much being said about public-private partnerships in developing solutions that lower energy consumption. How have Japanese companies, for instance, collaborated with the Japanese government to help meet nationwide energy intensity goals?

YS: In Japan, such collaborations are increasingly important for a nation that is dependent on imports of virtually all fossil fuels. For decades, Japanese energy policy has focused on efficiency, diversity and development of indigenous energy sources.

One such recent project is Fujisawa City in Kanagawa Prefecture, situated about 50km west of Tokyo. This collaboration sees nine companies coming together with the government to build an innovative smart town deploying services and energy systems based on Panasonic?s ?eco ideas? for green lifestyles. The companies include developers, manufacturers and service providers and will see an eventual actual operation of the town with about 1,000 households. The smart town is to be built on the vacant lot of Panasonic?s former factory site and is targeted to open in the fiscal year ending in March 2014.

Apart from these large-scale collaborations, there are other ways to contribute to the nation, especially in times of crisis. At the end of March 2011, Panasonic donated a Life Innovation Container to the Miyagi Prefecture, which suffered widespread devastation in the Great East Japan Earthquake. The container is a standalone power system equipped with solar panels and rechargeable batteries to deliver electricity to areas without access to electricity.

But such collaborations are picking up in other parts of Asia as well. For example in Singapore, we are partnering with the Housing Development Board (HDB), Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Economic Development Board (EDB) to test-bed total energy solutions on an existing public residential building in Punggol Eco-Town. This project aims to achieve zero CO2 emissions for common areas of public housing in Singapore, and provide residents with a complete total energy solutions package that helps monitor and better manage their energy consumption.

EMA: Do you think companies can combine making contributions to the environment with business growth? Do you think legislation, such as those enacted in Japan and soon to be enacted in Singapore, will push companies to be more energy-efficient?

YS: Our belief is that we must integrate environmental conservation with business growth.? As such, we strive to achieve the highest achievement levels in reducing CO2 emissions, recycling resources, the size of our energy systems business and the sales ratio of environmentally-friendly products. These are our ?Green Indexes? and they are just as important as our Global Excellence Indexes, which look at sales, operating profit and return of equity.

Legislation also has a role to play in driving mindset changes in energy consumption and the nation?s energy mix.? In July 2012, the Japanese government rolled out feed-in tariffs (FiTs) for renewable energy. The Japanese FiTs are significantly higher than those offered in both Germany and China. Such clean energy investments shift Japan?s reliance on nuclear energy. Government subsidies benefit solar panel makers such as Panasonic, spurring them to manufacture even more energy-efficient products and services.

We also applaud the Singapore government for introducing the Energy Conservation Act, which comes into effect in 2013, to improve energy efficiency across different sectors. It will also drive energy efficiency in business. The legislation requires factories that consume more than 15GWh of energy a year to implement minimum energy management standards, such as the appointment of an energy manager, reporting of energy use and submission of energy efficiency improvement plans.

This is likely to help households make more informed choices about purchasing energy-efficient appliances since the legislation stipulates the minimum energy performance standards and energy labelling scheme for common household appliances such as air-conditioners and refrigerators.

Yorihisa Shiokawa is Managing Executive Officer, Regional Head for the Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa of Panasonic Corporation, as well as Managing Director of Panasonic Asia Pacific. He assumed his role from April 2011, after three decades of building the brand name Panasonic in markets such as Europe, notably its digital audio-visual product and home appliance businesses.

Forrester: iPhone App Users Young And Wealthy, Android App Users Skew Older

ios-vs-android1According to a new Forrester Research report, among U.S. mobile device users, those who use apps tend to be younger and more affluent than those who stick just to the web. Nearly one-third of those who use mobile apps fall between the ages of 23 and 31, and another third are in the 32 to 45 category. Usage varies by OS, however, and Apple's iPhone app audience are generally younger and better off financially, while those on Android tend to be older and less moneyed.

Cancer deaths 'set for big fall'

Death rates from cancer are "set to fall dramatically" by 2030, according to Cancer Research UK.

It says fewer people smoking as well as improvements in diagnosis and treatment will lead to a 17% drop in death rate.

About 170 UK deaths per 100,000 of population were from cancer in 2010, and this figure is predicted to fall to 142 out of every 100,000.

Some of the biggest killers - lung, breast, bowel, and prostate cancer - are part of the trend.

The biggest fall is projected to be in ovarian cancer, with death rates dropping by 43%.

Prof Peter Sasieni, from Queen Mary, University of London, said: "Our latest estimations show that for many cancers, adjusting for age, death rates are set to fall dramatically in the coming decades."

As more people live to an elderly age, the total number of people who actually develop and die from cancer will increase - but these deaths will make up a smaller proportion of the total number of deaths, so the death rate will fall.

'Progress'

However, the death rate for other cancers such as those of the liver and mouth will increase over the next two decades.

The chief executive of Cancer Research UK, Dr Harpal Kumar, said: "These new figures are encouraging and highlight the huge progress we're making.

"Research across many areas is having real impact."

The Department of Health said: "These figures reflect improvements in cancer services, but we know there is still more to do.

"Our aim is to save 5,000 more lives every year by 2015 - and halve the gap in cancer survival between us and the best-performing countries in Europe."

Mom charged with being NYC madam pleads guilty

(AP) ? A suburban mother of four charged with moonlighting as a multimillion-dollar madam pleaded guilty Tuesday to promoting prostitution.

The Scotland-born Anna Gristina made the plea in Manhattan court. The judge said she'll be sentenced Nov. 20 to time served and probation as part of a plea deal. The judge warned she could also be deported.

She spent four months in jail before being released on $250,000 bond in June.

Prosecutors had said Gristina, who now lives in Monroe, had a roster of wealthy, well-placed clients and boasted of law-enforcement connections during 15 years in a business that made her millions. She had said she was merely starting a dating service.

She had been charged with a single count of promoting prostitution, stemming from a July 2011 tryst that authorities say she arranged involving two women and an undercover officer posing as a client.

Gristina was arrested Feb. 22 as she left a friend's Morgan Stanley office after a fundraising meeting for her business, prosecutors said.

Gristina said in court papers that investigators told her they'd let her go if she gave them information about five men ? not named in her filings, but described as a financier, an international banker and a member of a politically connected family, among others.

Cash for Gift Cards - Credit Card and Finance Tips

Credit CardsOnce, a long time, I had an acquaintance who, for inspiration in entrepreneurship, used to get some trips to the United States fear. I guess also the very dog, passed by the company?s account. What I do remember was his expression each time he returned, which can be summarized in that classic television than fuerrrrrrte. hallucinated coming with eyes wide, ready to benchmarking-copieteo-adapting those ideas yankees.

Today Internet helps. But very much. And if in financial matters can still freak out a tube, for better and for worse, with parents of subprime, for anything we think is running out inventiveness. Still have more, and good example of this is a business that the more I look the more I prefer the open mouth. I refer to the purchase of gift cards companies.

In the U.S. there is a strong tradition of promoting marketing actions based on coupons and the like, which has taken root in Spain only (do not know if Yellow Pages continue with that, it was more pain than nothing). However, the derivative of the gift cards in the U.S. seems to raze also found more echo in our country, so it is possible that this business has some small chance in Spain (although it is difficult for the critical mass necessary) . What is this trading cards?

We?re talking about the typical cards that can be exchanged at commercial establishments for products or services. You know, prepaid cards used as gifts between individuals, or derived from cards or loyalty promotion of own brands, etc.. Very typical of these dates.

Well, Gift Card Rescue will purchase these cards, or you change them with ones that interest you most. Then sell the same on its website for individuals. Obviously the business is in the difference in the purchase price. I barely had time to examine the site, and if they do not know, but if you meet a number, not a bad idea to raise selling them directly to the issuers themselves. That if, while these would save some money would also be aware of the commercial failure of his business if the amounts were relevant.

Speaking frankly ? Statistical Modeling, Causal Inference, and ...

Posted by? on

Even within the realm of writing-about-statistics, there are things I can say in a blog that are much more difficult to include in an academic article. Blogging gives me freedom.

But I want to distinguish between two different sorts of frankness.

1. Obnoxiousness: In a blog I can write, ?I hate X? as rudely as I?d like without needing to justify myself.

2. Openness: In a blog I can write about the limitations of my work. It?s a real challenge to discuss limitations in a scholarly article, as we?re always looking over our shoulder at what referees might think. Sure, sometimes I can get away with writing ?Survey weighting is a mess,? but my impression is that most scholarly articles are relentlessly upbeat. Sort of like how a magazine article typically will have a theme and just plug it over and over. In a blog we can more easily admit uncertainty.

Overall, I think blogs are more celebrated for feature 1 above (the freedom to say what you really feel, to be rude, partisan, and politically incorrect), but I think feature 2 (the freedom to express uncertainty) is important too.

Can Grief Be Written Away? | Psychology Today

A teen boy was walking his girlfriend home one night when a drunk driver crashed into them. The girl died, the boy lived. That hit-and-run accident cracked Carolyn Roy-Bornstein's life into a before-and-after that is described with writerly grace in her memoir Crash: A Mother, a Son, and the Journey from Grief to Gratitude.

A pediatrician and a writer, Roy-Bornstein's publication credits range from JAMA to Pediatrics for Parents to Chicken Soup for the Soul.

Q & A with Carolyn Roy-Bornstein:

Q: In your acknowledgments you thank someone for "seeing the book that was trying to emerge from the one I was originally writing." Memoirs are tricky that way. There can be so many "right" ways to approach the material. Can you tell us more about your process?

The reason I started to write this book is ultimately not the reason I finished it. From the very first night of the crash, I was grateful Neil survived but at the same time grieving for his losses. His traumatic brain injury caused a profound depression, memory loss and a changed personality. But standing in the shadow of the mother whose child was killed in the accident, I felt guilty for my feelings of grief. After all, shouldn't I just be grateful Neil was alive? It was this concept of disenfranchised grief that I thought was the story I needed to tell.

But ultimately, that was just a small part of a larger story, a story of hope and reslience and the power of family.

Q: Although you always kept a journal, you didn't catch up with your notes and entries until some time after the main events happened, and years more to be ready to write Crash. I take it you'd agree with author Martin Amis, who said, "What happens to you in your life doesn't become available as fiction until after a three-year lag, because it has to travel up and down your spine."

The English author Graham Greene, too, talks about the emotional and temporal distance a writer must have from an experieince in order to gain the necessary perspective. He describes it as "the sliver of ice in the heart of a writer." I fully believe that and know that this is why it took me so long to write the book. I needed time and distance to fully appreciate the experience's meaning and impact in my life. I teach memoir and personal essay courses and I often have students come in wanting to write about a subject that they are clearly too close to to have the necessary perspective.

Q: Some people urged you to move on, as they couldn't understand that the after-effects of the accident would continue for a very long time. How did you explain to them?

Answering the question, "How is Neil doing?" grew harder and harder. Early on, it was easy. There were CAT scan results to report, outcomes of operations, weeks of physical therapy completed. Five years after the crash, Neil had graduated from college, had a teaching position and looked, on the outside, perfectly fine. But he still suffered from depression and saw a therapist. He graduated college, but struggled with memory loss and PTSD. In some ways, I think I wrote this book to answer the question, "How's Neil?"

Q: Which is more infuriating: the fact that people continue to drive drunk, or that the court system is so slow and drawn out that victims feel victimized again and again?

You know, I spent some time in Sweden many years ago. There, they have very strict drunk driving laws, or they did when I was there. There, if you were caught drinking and driving, you lost your license. For good. Period. It made for some very interesting parties: One partner at the party would be stone cold sober while the other would be happily drinking away. It was just how it was.? Everyone knew the consequences and behaved accordingly.

In this country, lawyers have made a specialty of getting drunk drivers off. Here we see drunk drivers arrested again and again, even after licenses have been suspended. Here, our culture needs to change. This cannot remain the norm.

Q: I noted the subtitle of your book, and it seems intended to convey an uplifting message. Do you still get very upset when you think about what happened or mainly thankful that Neil's injuries weren't even worse?

While there is an urgent social message to the book, the ultimate story is hopeful and optimistic, and I'm glad you picked up on that. And while I certainly am grateful Neil's head injury wasn't worse, I do want to get out the word that traumatic brain injury (TBI) is often an unapparent wound. For people who have experienced a TBI or know someone who has, I hope my book is a mirror for them. I hope they read what I've written and say, "Yes! That is how it was for me." And for people who have not expereinced TBI, I want to convey the message that people who may look perfectly fine on the outside may struggle more than we know.

Q: Will you comment on the value of writing, especially of being an experienced writer as you are, when it comes to getting through such challenging times?

The benefits of writing about difficult or traumatic experiences is well-documented. (And I guess I'm speaking as a physician here.) Many studies have shown that ill patients who are asked to write about their experiences show improvements in physically measurable parameters such as lung capacity and immune function.

As a medical professional, I see writing as a way to explore and better understand my relationships with my patients and my colleagues. I recently had the good fortune to run a workshop at the University of Iowa's Examined Life Conference along with Neillie Herman, Creative Director at Columbia University Medical School. Nellie talked about writing as a way to "exert control over something we can never control--the past."

So even though I cannot change what has happened, I can shape the narrative. I can own it. I can take an obstacle and turn it into an opportunity. I learned about the intricacies of traumatic brain injury. As an ambassador for the Brain Injury Association, I talk to high school students at pre-prom events, college students during Alcohol Awareness Week, doctors and nurses at Trauma Symposia. I am not about to let this drunk driver's actions define who I am. I will not let my peace be about what kind of sentence he receives or how much of it he serves.

People ask me if writing this book was cathartic. I say it was the opposite of cathartic. It was like scraping at scabs every day. But it was necessary. It was necessary for me to write this book. To define my family's reaction to this tragedy and to chart our course moving forward.

THE RACE: Ohio and Florida could be the deciders

It could all boil down to Ohio and Florida.

The two states are the sparkling jewels in the swing-state crown. One or the other ? or both ? could easily end up deciding the Electoral College winner.

Until recently, both states had been leaning Republican, although President Barack Obama carried them in 2008 ? Ohio by five points, Florida by three.

No Republican has ever won the presidency without carrying Ohio.

While Obama headed to New York Monday for the U.N. General Assembly, Romney campaigned in Colorado and planned to join running mate Paul Ryan on Tuesday for the last two days of a three-day Ohio bus tour. Obama campaigns in Ohio Wednesday.

Both candidates crisscrossed Florida last week.

Of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House, Florida holds 29 and Ohio 18.

Six weeks out, many major polls show a slight Obama advantage, nationally as well as in Florida, Ohio and several other battleground states.

The president's campaign opened a new ad offensive Monday in Ohio with a television spot blasting Romney's remark at a private fundraiser that "47 percent" of Americans don't pay federal income taxes and expect support from the government.

The ad suggests Romney hasn't "come clean" on his own taxes by still refusing to release returns before 2010.

The Romneys did release their 2011 returns Friday, showing they paid a rate of just 14.1 percent on $13.7 million in income. That's below the rate paid by millions of middle-class wage earners.

Romney put out his own swing-state commercial blaming an alleged lax stance by Obama toward China for the loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs.

Romney acknowledged Sunday he was trailing the president in several key states, but said of the polls: "I know that in the coming six weeks, they're very unlikely to stay where they are today."

Obama's foreign policy bright spot now looking dimmer

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If you thought Mitt Romney was the only presidential candidate whose problems were piling up in the final stretch of the 2012 election campaign, think again.

From Middle East upheaval to the troubled Afghan war effort to a more assertive Russia, President Barack Obama is facing pressures that threaten to chip away at a foreign policy record his aides hoped would be immune to Republican attack.

The White House is increasingly concerned but isn't hitting the panic button, yet. Administration officials are heartened by Republican challenger Mitt Romney's own recent foreign policy stumbles and doubt Obama's critics will gain traction in a campaign focused mainly on the U.S. economy.

As a result, when Obama speaks inside the cavernous U.N. General Assembly hall on Tuesday exactly six weeks before the U.S. election, he will seek to reassure American voters as well as world leaders he is on top of the latest global challenges. But he won't propose any new remedies or bold initiatives.

There will be close scrutiny of how far he goes in talking tough about Iran's nuclear program - but even on that point, aides say privately he will not break new policy ground.

Obama's final turn on the world stage before facing voters will be a reflection of where his priorities lie. Despite simmering global crises, he will skip traditional private meetings with foreign counterparts and squeeze his U.N. visit into just 24 hours so he can jump back on the campaign trail.

However, Obama will make time in New York on Monday to tape an appearance on the popular TV talk-show "The View" - a scheduling decision that had campaign aides scrambling to defend the president's choice of voter outreach over diplomacy.

U.N. delegates shouldn't take it personally.

"It's just that they don't vote," said Joseph Cirincione, a foreign policy expert at the Ploughshares Fund, a global security foundation.

But Obama's relatively low-key U.N. itinerary will also be a stark reminder that the heady optimism that greeted him when he took office promising to be a transformational statesman has cooled, giving way to geopolitical realities.

RUN OF BAD NEWS

Aides insist foreign policy is still a bright spot for Obama. The White House never tires of touting the killing of Osama bin Laden and the ending of the Iraq war. But his record appears to have dimmed a bit with a recent run of bad news.

Obama has found himself sharply at odds with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over how to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions, a dispute that sent relations between the two close allies to a new low on the president's watch.

An eruption of violent unrest against U.S. diplomatic missions across the Muslim world has confronted Obama with his worst setback yet in his efforts to keep the Arab Spring from fueling a new wave of anti-Americanism - and has underscored that he has few good options to deal with it.

NATO's cutback of joint operations with Afghan forces in response to a spate of deadly "insider" attacks has also raised questions about what will be left behind when, under Obama's strategy, most U.S. forces depart Afghanistan in 2014.

And Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision last week to suspend a U.S. aid mission to Moscow threatens what's left of Obama's "reset" in relations with Russia, which his aides had touted as a signature foreign policy accomplishment.

At the same time, the Obama administration has shown itself unwilling to intervene to end the bloody crisis in Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad has defied calls to step aside.

Romney and his campaign aides have pounced on these developments, seeking to support their argument that Obama has weakened America's global standing by failing to lead.

"It's symptomatic of failed policy," said Dan Senor, a Romney adviser who served as a spokesman in Baghdad under President George W. Bush. "Biography and force of personality are nice attributes but not substitutes for leadership."

Obama, whose lofty oratory and vision of multilateralism helped him win the Nobel Peace Prize after 11 months in office, is widely credited with improving the tone of U.S. foreign policy after what was perceived as Bush's go-it-alone approach.

"It's clear that the United States is in a stronger position than we were when he took office," White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said in previewing the themes of Obama's U.N. speech.

But while polls show Obama remains personally popular in many parts of the world, America's image is again in decline, especially in the Middle East, the focus of intense personal outreach at the start of the president's term.

SAGGING FOREIGN POLICY RATING

Though it remains unclear how much of a liability the latest crisis will be for Obama at home, his approval rating on foreign policy dropped to 49 percent from 54 percent in August, according to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll after attacks on U.S. missions in Egypt, Libya and other Muslim countries.

But Romney may have a hard time reaping dividends. A Pew poll found that while 45 percent of Americans approved of Obama's handling of the crisis, only 26 percent backed Romney's criticism of his response. Romney was widely accused of opportunism in a national tragedy.

Obama, at the U.N., will address the unrest in Muslim countries fueled by an anti-Islamic film his administration has denounced, and will repeat his message that the United States "will never retreat from the world," Vietor said.

The U.S. president said on Sunday in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" program that despite the promise of the Arab Spring, there will be "bumps in the road" on the way to a more democratic and peaceful Middle East and North Africa.

He will also reassert that Iran must not be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon. But aides say privately that while he may sharpen his rhetoric, he will stop short of setting a specific "red line" for Tehran as Netanyahu has demanded.

Obama told "60 Minutes" he shares Netanyahu's concerns but will make policy decisions based on U.S. interests.

Calls for renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks - something he promised to make a priority when he took office but which he has failed to advance - have been a staple of Obama's U.N. appearances, and it would be a glaring omission if he did not mention the issue. But he will have to be cautious to avoid alienating pro-Israel voters.

Before traveling to New York, Egypt's new Islamist president, Mohamed Mursi, told the New York Times that Washington must change its approach to the Arab world and help build a Palestinian state to reduce pent-up anger in the region.

The implicit warning in Obama's U.N. speech will be that a Romney presidency would pursue a more hawkish foreign policy.

Also unspoken will be the fact that Obama and his aides were caught flat-footed by the latest turmoil in Muslim countries and are still struggling to recalibrate their Arab Spring strategy.

Though the protests seemed to have subsided in most places for now, some conservative commentators have conjured up images of the Iran hostage crisis - which helped sink Jimmy Carter's re-election - should the situation deteriorate.

"If there's more of it, it drives home a sense that he doesn't know what he's doing," said Elliot Abrams, former deputy national security adviser under Bush.
