ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) announced the ranking of Pakistani universities on Friday on the basis of quality teaching and research.
HEC Chairperson Dr Javaid R Laghari made the announcement at a press conference held at the commission secretariat. Speaking on the occasion, the HEC chairperson said the primary purpose of the ranking was to share the key issues that determine the state of higher education in a particular institution and drive the higher education institutions (HEIs) towards improved quality and research and promote a culture among HEIs of the country for participation in the world rankings.
Dr Laghari said that the ranking is a quality indicator and will help shed light on key indicators of higher education institutions to allow the students, parents, potential employers and all other stakeholders to make informed and timely decisions regarding higher education institutions. ?It will inculcate a spirit of competition among the universities to raise the standard of education.? HEC chairperson said. ?The activity will also help promote a culture of participation in the world university rankings,? he said.
The ranking criteria revolve around three main parameters ? implementation status of quality assurance criteria, teaching quality and research. The distance education like AIOU and Virtual University were excluded from the ranking lists. The ranking 2013 was based on the year 2011-12 data provided by HEIs. Due to the problems faced by the universities in Pakistan, the primarily identified QS world ranking criteria was amended as per feedback received from the higher education institutions. In spite of the difficulties associated with ranking, the HEC is the first one in the Islamic world that has done rankings twice ? first time in 2006 and second in 2011.
